Hey everyone, I'm late so I can't wish you guys a Happy Thanksgiving but I hope you had a great one!!! I try to express my thanks more often than not, so being thankful on Thanksgiving isn't really anything significant for me; it's always been about family gathering and the feast! I'm constantly reminding myself that despite how much I would like to get ahead in life, I should be thankful for what I currently have. It's a valuable perspective that my dad gave me when I was an early teenager. Unlike a lot of fathers who constantly remind their sons and daughters that they had to walk x-amount of miles uphill, in the snow, to get to school every morning, my dad only had to tell me his story once and it stuck because I had no idea that he had struggled as bad as he did when he was a kid.
It's a common first generation immigrant family story, but it's different when you find out your dad was kicked out of the house while he was your age, along with all my uncles. Growing up they had to steal, join gangs, lie about their age to get a job, etc. in order to survive on the streets of LA. After the initial shock of learning that my sweet, kindhearted grandfather, who I couldn't understand because I never learned Cantonese, beat the shit out of my dad and kicked him out of the house, the lessons from the stories started to settle in. Granted the stories were also immensely entertaining with backstreet brawls, some of the most dangerous gangs still out there, shoplifting, and the realization of why all those art books that were passed down to me still had their library card slips in them... XD
Gratitude has always been a principle I've adhered to throughout my life, and it's all a result of good parenting. It's something I hope to successfully pass on to my son. So far, it's going well and I'm thankful for that!
I love the holidays, but I'm happy to be back in the office and drawing again, lol. Let's make the best of what's left of 2014, yeah? Be good to yourselves and each other!
Until next time (when I'll actually have some art to post)!
